Brutus is a calm and loving, 11-year-old gentleman who is ready to find his forever home! He is a Frenchie/Bulldog mix and was surrendered by a loving family that could not afford to take him to the vet for medical care. Brutus had not been to the vet in many years and was confined to the basement so that he would not accidently trip his owner who also had medical issues.

Due to the lack of vet care, Brutus had unresolved skin issues, open wounds, fleas, ear infections and an undiagnosed heart murmur. His skin issues caused missing areas of fur on his back and tail, but the missing fur is now beginning to grow back as seen in the photos below! His nub tail now is full of wags, and it is wonderful to see because he couldn’t wag his tail before due to his skin swelling.

He has a grade 3 heart murmur, so he is on heart medication (Pimobendan) twice a day. He must eat a low sodium dog food and must avoid table scraps. He also needs to stay a healthy weight. He may require another cardiac ECHO in the future if he starts showing signs of coughing or stressed breathing, but we are keeping our fingers crossed that he doesn’t. No one had a clue that he even had a heart murmur until the vet listened to his heart…you would never know he had one by the way he acts. He also has a small mass on his rectum that is a rectal adenoma. This is a benign mass that will just need to be monitored. It has never given him any problems.

Brutus is a happy pup who enjoys a short walk and multiple naps each day. He adores getting attention and having his belly rubbed. He also loves deer antlers and Nylabones. When given a Pork Chomps dog bone, he will throw it up in the air and chase after it…such a silly boy!!! He should not be given any toys that have stuffing or that can be torn apart easily as he will shred them and eat the pieces in a matter of minutes. He LOVES, LOVES tennis balls and will sit and stare if one is out of his reach. However, if you throw the ball, do not expect to get it back!! 😊

Brutus VERY MUCH ENJOYS his food, so he is pushy while his foster mom gets meals ready. If his forever home has other dogs, he will need to be either crated or in a separate room while eating as he will try to eat the other dogs’ food when he is finished with his. He also really likes his toys and doesn’t like to give them up. He is not aggressive, but he will not let go. His foster dog siblings have not bothered him while he is chewing on his bones/toys, so it is unknown how he would react to another dog trying to steal a bone/toy from him. Brutus will get into low trash cans and drag out the contents. For this reason, it is important that he not have access to these types of wastebaskets.

He does not interact much with the other dogs in his foster home…a sniff here and there, but that’s about it! His foster dog siblings are also older so their energy levels match. His foster family allows Brutus to decide his activity level, especially on warmer days and during play. He cares about his foster mom a lot as he will always come running to her when she gets home from work. He lived alone for so many years and yet he trusts his foster family and wants to be around them. He really is a sweet boy!

Brutus likes his dog bed and blankets just as much as a human bed or couch, so he is not picky on where he rests. He is house broken and leash trained, and while a forever home with a fenced yard is preferred, it is not required. He also knows the command to “sit.”

Brutus needs a home with a low-key family with older children since he may take food or toys from younger children and eat them. He is not aggressive, but he is not gentle either. He will go into his crate with treats but has some separation anxiety when you leave him in the crate. He will bark continuously so he is not a dog that would do well in an apartment or condo. On days he needs to be crated for a while, he is given a Trazodone to help with his anxiety. On days his foster family is home a lot, he does not require one. His foster home has tried leaving him out for short periods of time while they are gone from home and so far, he has done well. However, they crate him while they are at work. Ideally, he would love a family where someone works from home or is home a lot, but this is not a requirement.

Brutus would love a family who will give him lots of belly rubs and cuddle time. He really is a sweet, loving boy. If his cute little old man face makes you smile like it does his foster mom, please submit an application for adoption!!
