Sammy in South Florida

If you like a dog with a lot of character, Sammy is the one for you. He is a 32 pound lump of love, but is protective of his crate and can be food aggressive when it comes to other dogs.  He has gotten along well with the only other dog in his foster home, but does not engage in play with him.  However, Sammy does share the occasional snooze on a dog bed with his canine house mate! Sammy has been known to be dog aggressive, so he may tolerate a very passive dog but would have issues with another alpha-dog.  He is fiercely loyal, gets very attached and will follow you everywhere.  He jumps up on the couch or bed and likes to sleep touching you.  Sometimes he will cry like a baby if you don’t let him.  He is very intelligent and knows what he can get away with!

Sammy came to FBV with some aggression and guarding issues, but it turns out that patience, a firm hand, and a warm and loving lap to cuddle in has brought out Sammy’s loving side. So far, he has behaved exceptionally.   In foster care Sammy decided it was his job to help provide for dinner so one night he stalked and captured a large lizard…………but………..one look at his foster mom’s face made him doubt that lizard stew was quite up her alley. Still, Sammy felt he should bask in the glory of the hunt and his jaws were not opening to drop anything!  A long hour later, he got tired of the idea of lizard gumbo, gave in, dropped the lizard and came back in the house “Harrumph, silly humans……………..”

Sammy loves being with his people and has been known to grab your pant leg and shake it if you try to leave him in a room alone. When left loose in the house he is well behaved and has never touched a thing. Due to his hunting nature he is better off in a home that does not have any snakes, turtles, cats, bunnies……………or lizards. His ideal home would be one where he is the only pet and can be loved, doted on, and be the center of attention like this handsome, goofy and loveable boy truly deserves.

What you read here is based on Sammy’s observed behavior while in his current home.
Sammy was rescued just in time from a kill shelter on 11/22. So there was plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Sammy was supposedly brought to the shelter for being dog aggressive. That may be true if he was with another alpha-dog but with my very passive frenchie they seem to get along just fine. They were even caught napping together on the same mat.Sammy was neutered before leaving the shelter and when picked up he was a bit groggy and congested. He also had some partially healed wounds on his body that the Vet has cultured and sent for testing. He was given a lye bath at the vet and was put on antibiotics just in case.So far Sammy has behaved exceptionally. He loves to cuddle and follows you from room to room. He weighs 32 lbs and has short legs but that hasn’t stopped him from jumping up onto the bed so he can better see the TV to watch his cartoons.

Hello, my name is Audrey and i’m currently looking to adopt a Frenchie in need. I’ve always wanted a frenchie but never wanted to buy one knowing there are so many in need of good homes. I work as a veterinary technician in Woodland Hills California and have seen so many cute and loving frienchies with owners that are so proud to have this breed. I am interested in Sammy because he looks like a little guy that needs a loving and fun home, and i need a loving and fun little guy like him in my home :) please keep me updated on him and when he will be up for adoption. Thank you.

I called Alyssia before Christmas with my phone number for Sammy’s foster parent to contact me with hopefully more answers to my questions regarding potential interest to adopt Sammy about mid February 2012. unfortunately, i have had no rsponse to date. I have been a newf breeder since 1977 until about 6 years ago and lost my last newf about 4 month ago at age 13. Our family contains at present of 1 red female frenchy and a 4 yr pied male frenchy as well as 1 male cat.All of them jouint our home at about 10-12 weeks of age. Everyone is spayed, respectively neutred. i am aware of Sammy’s “aggressive’ behavior toward other dogs. However, I have experienced it is the owner who tolerates or not such behavior and establish clearly what is acceptable behavior or not. i am a retired scientist living in SW FL during an extended winter where Sammy would be the only dog in my fully fenced house/yard – with adjacent homes’ dog’s greeting when walked etc. From April to October Sammy would share a very large home and fenced property in the Pacific Northwest with the 2 frenchys and the cat. It would be most important that Sammy loves and tolerates well car travel as he would be essetially glued to my hip and go whereever i go. please contact me soon to answer related questions as i would like to meet Sammy and establish a match and thus commitment or rule out this little guy and move on in my search.
    Thank you.

    • Thank you for your interest, keep checking for when he moves to the available page. The process involves you completing the formal application and we contacting you after receiving it and setting up second steps of interview and house visit and hopefully the approval of your application and arrangements for pick up are made. This includes conversations with the foster family and perspective forever homes. Please apply and start the process of bringing a companion home. :)
