In Loving Memory of Lola

Some souls arrive quietly and still manage to change everything. Lola was one of them.

From the moment she stepped into rescue, this petite, 5‑year‑old French Bulldog wrapped the world in her softness. She had the kind of spirit that didn’t need to announce itself — it simply glowed. A devoted mama in her past, a gentle companion to every person and pup she met, Lola carried a sweetness that felt almost sacred.

Even as she arrived a bit thin, a bit fragile, and still recovering from the demands of motherhood, her heart was unwavering. She adored snuggling into warm laps, curling beside her foster siblings, and soaking up affection with quiet gratitude. Her temperament was pure gold — steady, loving, endlessly kind. She made it impossible not to fall in love with her.

When her diagnosis came — advanced hemangiosarcoma affecting multiple organs — it broke every heart that had come to know her. Surgery wasn’t an option, and her time would be shorter than anyone hoped. But Lola’s story didn’t end with sadness. It shifted into something tender, intentional, and deeply meaningful.

Lola became a hospice angel, held gently through her final chapter by a foster mom who made sure every day was filled with comfort, dignity, and love. She was cherished in the way she always deserved — soft blankets, warm snuggles, peaceful days, and the reassurance that she would never face a moment of fear or loneliness again.

When it was time for her to cross the rainbow bridge, she did so at home, wrapped in love, free from suffering, and surrounded by the people who adored her.

Lola’s journey reminds us why rescue matters. She reminds us that every dog — no matter their past, no matter how long they stay — deserves to be seen, cherished, and honored. Her life was short, but her impact was immeasurable. She left this world the way every soul should: loved beyond measure.

Run free, sweet Lola. You will always be remembered, always be missed, and always be loved.

Chunk Memorial

We unfortunately have some very sad news to share. We had recently been concerned about Chunk and his quality of life. His vet had reached out to us, worried that he was suffering. Our priority has always been to make sure our dogs are comfortable, loved, and never in pain. We consulted a neurologist and other veterinarians and, with heavy hearts, we made the difficult decision to let Chunk go peacefully.

Chunk came to us at 9 years old after having been in 3 homes before, but it was definitely no fault of his own that he had been in numerous homes. He was absolutely the best! He loved Nylabones, plushies, and to burrow under blankets. He also loved treats and would gobble them up quickly not caring if he got a finger or two in the process!

Chunk was so loved, and he will be missed terribly. Rest in peace, sweet Chunk.

RIP George

George came to FBV at 2.5 years old and 21 pounds. He had numerous major medical issues upon coming into rescue and despite all efforts, he continued to decline.

We will always cherish George’s memory. He was a big bundle of love and had the sweetest soul. He brought smiles to the faces of everyone he met. George absolutely loved people and would do a little bounce toward them to get them to play with him. He also enjoyed chewing on Benebones.

Thank you to all our volunteers and followers who helped George live his last moments in happiness and showered with love. Thanks to everyone’s support, George was able to get the care he needed to live his last few months with joy.

Rest in peace sweet George! We will love you forever.

In Memory of Velma

Velma was lovingly surrendered by her family at almost 12 years of age. Velma came to FBV in pretty rough shape. She had vision issues, but she sure could still follow the treats!! She also was great with potty training and enjoyed staying outside and sunning herself. Sometimes getting her to come back inside to the cool house was a challenge.

Velma had surgery for mammary tumor removal just before her arrival to FBV but saw one of our vets immediately who gave her some new meds to help keep her comfortable. Despite everyone’s best efforts, Velma began having difficulty breathing not long after being in our care and after x-rays, it was determined that Velma’s cancer had spread. There was sadly nothing that could be done to improve her quality of life, so the difficult decision was made to allow her to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Her foster mom was with her and held her while giving her lots of kisses and tons of love.

We are all incredibly heartbroken from the loss of Velma. She was a precious girl and was very loved in her short time with FBV. Rest in peace, Velma.

RIP Will and Pi

FBV lost a dear volunteer and friend. Will was an amazing person and such an awesome advocate for rescues and dogs. It was his wish that FBV take his pups, whom he adopted from us, when he passed. We did without any hesitation and therefore, brought into our care immediately his beloved Poly and Pi.

Poly (brindle pied) came into rescue healthy at 8 years of age and 24 lbs. Unfortunately, Pi (cream) was not looking as healthy as he was 12+ years old and showing the signs of age. He had cataracts and a life-long struggle with regurgitation and needed smaller, more frequent meals. He also was emaciated (and was continuing to lose weight) and found to have pneumonia, anemia, dehydration and other medical issues. He had been to the vet numerous times in the short time with our rescue and was worsening. The vets felt his quality of life was poor and recommended euthanasia. We made the difficult decision to let this sweet boy cross over the Rainbow Bridge to be with his dad who we know was there with opening arms just waiting for Pi to join him.

Despite Pi’s health issues, he was the sweetest boy. He was good with bathing and grooming, rode well in the car, loved sitting on the couch with Poly and his humans, and was a champ at the vet. He also was a registered therapy dog that children read to at the library. He was an amazing boy who will be greatly missed.

Please when thinking about your future and the future care of your pups, consider who you will leave in charge of your pups and their care. Make sure to have a will stating this and ensure they are left with the funds needed to provide for them. It is so very important.

RIP Will and Pi. You will be greatly missed.

Your forever in our hearts, Ziggy

Some devastating news regarding Ziggy…

There was a tragic accident where Ziggy followed his foster mom outside near her pool. He fell in, sunk to the bottom and drowned. It happened in a split second. She immediately dove in after him and performed CPR. Unfortunately, he passed away instantly.

We are all completely devastated. His foster mother is guilt ridden and feels an immense amount of shame. His foster mother loved him immensely. She had diligently been working on

getting this old man back to health. She poured her heart into caring for him. One moment of relaxed judgment, one misstep, one second has created tragedy. She knows this.

It is so important to remember that Frenchies notoriously are not strong swimmers. Their bone structure, stature, and breathing issues make swimming difficult. Even if they can swim (many just sink) they will get very tired, very quickly.

Frenchies should never be around your pool unless they are supervised at ALL times with a life vest. Drownings can happen to anyone with water nearby, even incredibly experienced Frenchie owners. Accidents can happen and do happen.

So, we beg you, please make sure you’re taking precautions always, being diligent about safety practices and watching your pets at all times. And please remember Ziggy, his growth, his happiness while with FBV, and how much joy he had.

We are sorry this happened, Ziggy. We all loved you. RIP sweet man.

Ziggy is a senior guy who came to FBV yesterday. He was surrendered to a vet office because the vet had refused to euthanize him as the owner had requested. The vet reached out to rescue to get him the care he needed and to help find him a forever home.

Ziggy is currently staying outside of Philadelphia. He is not neutered, has demodex mange and severe arthritis in his front limbs which is causing lameness of his front left leg. He also will need removal of his left eye that is damaged from severe glaucoma.

He saw the vet today and was given a Cytopoint injection and some prednisone. After the steroids, he will start treatment for the mange. He also will have more radiographs tomorrow to evaluate his shoulders and spine and will be scheduled for an enucleation and neuter.

He is a very sweet boy and is quite the talker!

Georgette Memorial

We received some sad news from Georgette’s forever family. They sadly had to let her cross over the Rainbow Bridge. Here are some words that her mama wanted to share about her:

“Eight years ago, we were fortunate to be able to adopt Georgette through FBV. It is an understatement to say that she was a wonderful addition to our family. She was a funny, quirky, sassy, loving little dog and we spoiled her rotten. She loved to eat, go for walks, snuggle, and play and she kept us laughing with her attitude and “Frenchie behaviors”. She loved attention from everyone, especially kids. I type this through tears because we made the heartbreaking decision to put her down due to the ravages of a brain tumor. We will never forget our Georgie and we will always be grateful to FBV for bringing us together. She was the best girl.”

Run free sweet girl. You were obviously so very special and loved.

Baxie Memorial

We have some incredibly sad news to share about one of our alumni pups. Sweet Baxie has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge leaving a huge hole in the hearts of her family members.

Her family sent us this notice of her passing:

“It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know that Baxie went to heaven.

She was one tough little cookie, but in the end, she was ready to go be with her sister Baby J. We can’t thank you and everyone at State enough for all you did for her. We adopted her in 2017 at 8 years old from FBV. She lived to 13.64 years old and had a great life but fought hard for it. She overcame Cushings, cancer, a brain tumor (with radiation) and enumerable UTIs, skin/dermatology and other issues. In the end, her age and the brain tumor caught up with her. We are extremely grateful to have had the honor and privilege of her being part of our family. That was only possible as a result of the great work FBV and all of its volunteers do.

We look forward to being of service to FBV in any way we can. Baxie’s story is a testament to the fact that all that you do is a service that is greatly needed. Please keep up the good work y’all!”

Baxie obviously was very special. Her family loved her so much and gave her an amazing life. We are grateful to them for giving her such a wonderful life. RIP sweet Baxie! You are now running free.

Sophie Memorial

We have some very sad news….

Sophie has crossed the rainbow bridge.

Sophie was an adorable 6-year-old smiley gal who was surrendered to FBV due to IVDD. She had surgery but remained with impaired mobility and incontinence. She adored her people and LOVED sitting in her person’s lap and chilling with her humans on the couch. She was the ultimate snuggle buddy. She also loved chewing on toys/bones (especially Benebones).

Her foster mother had noticed a change in Sophie one day. She was eating but seemed quieter. She brought her to the vet and chest X-rays were taken. It showed an immense amount of fluid in her chest cavity. Sophie had shown no signs but had a mass that had grown in her chest and ruptured.

Devastatingly, there was nothing that could have been done to fix this for Sophie. The decision was made to let her cross the bridge to free her from any pain. Her foster mother fed her some chocolate and cheese whiz and was there with her, loving her, to the very end.

Sophie was in our care for some time. With that, she received so much love and support from all of our Villagers. Whenever there was an ask for help with her care, our community of supporters came through for her.

Thank you to everyone that loved Sophie. Thank you to her foster family for showing her how loved she was all the way to the Rainbow Bridge.

RIP Ivan

We have some very sad news to share. Ivan’s heart stopped while under anesthesia for a dental and ear packing, and he unfortunately passed away.

We hadn’t chosen a dental lightly especially at his age, but a dental had been recommended for him 2 years ago per past vet records and he had to have over 80% of his teeth removed or there would eventually be other serious health complications for him. We had chosen to remove the rotten teeth, at the recommendation of the vet, to give him a better quality of life.

Even with all of Ivan’s ailments, he was a happy old man who was enjoying his new life at his foster home. He ate up all the attention and enjoyed the company of his foster family and their pack.

His last days were happy. He got to visit a dog park, ate scrambled eggs for breakfast, ate all his new favorite treats, went on walks around the neighborhood and received nightly snuggles on the couch with his foster dad. He was very much loved.

Our hearts are extremely heavy. We appreciate the amazing love and life that his foster family had shown him, and we greatly appreciate all that they did for him all the way until the end when his foster mom drove to the vet’s office to hold him one last time.

Rest in love Ivan.

Please give a warm welcome to Ivan! He is a handsome 12-year-old gentleman who was surrendered by his owner when they no longer had the time to provide the care he needed. He is currently hanging his hat in Texas with a wonderful foster family until he has improved medically.

Ivan came to FBV stinky, shaky, and with overgrown toenails (sadly some toenails were grown into his paw pads). He also came with numerous sores/scabs all over his body – from head to tail and especially in his face folds. Both his eyes have cataracts that hinder his vision, and his hearing seems to be impaired as well.

He has been to the vet and was found to have bacterial and yeast infections in his ears. He also has a bacterial skin infection. He has been prescribed medications for the infections so hopefully these will clear up in no time at all. His shaking, per the vet, is neurological. The vet also found that 80% of his teeth need to be pulled so a dental will be in his future.

Because of Ivan’s skin issues, he has required more frequent baths but no worries…he enjoys them! He is just as sweet as pie and truly loves everyone and everything including his foster fur brothers. He also really loves naps and baby carrots. He is a guy’s dog – obsessed with his foster dad following him everywhere he goes.
