RIP George

George came to FBV at 2.5 years old and 21 pounds. He had numerous major medical issues upon coming into rescue and despite all efforts, he continued to decline.

We will always cherish George’s memory. He was a big bundle of love and had the sweetest soul. He brought smiles to the faces of everyone he met. George absolutely loved people and would do a little bounce toward them to get them to play with him. He also enjoyed chewing on Benebones.

Thank you to all our volunteers and followers who helped George live his last moments in happiness and showered with love. Thanks to everyone’s support, George was able to get the care he needed to live his last few months with joy.

Rest in peace sweet George! We will love you forever.

In Memory of Velma

Velma was lovingly surrendered by her family at almost 12 years of age. Velma came to FBV in pretty rough shape. She had vision issues, but she sure could still follow the treats!! She also was great with potty training and enjoyed staying outside and sunning herself. Sometimes getting her to come back inside to the cool house was a challenge.

Velma had surgery for mammary tumor removal just before her arrival to FBV but saw one of our vets immediately who gave her some new meds to help keep her comfortable. Despite everyone’s best efforts, Velma began having difficulty breathing not long after being in our care and after x-rays, it was determined that Velma’s cancer had spread. There was sadly nothing that could be done to improve her quality of life, so the difficult decision was made to allow her to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Her foster mom was with her and held her while giving her lots of kisses and tons of love.

We are all incredibly heartbroken from the loss of Velma. She was a precious girl and was very loved in her short time with FBV. Rest in peace, Velma.

RIP Will and Pi

FBV lost a dear volunteer and friend. Will was an amazing person and such an awesome advocate for rescues and dogs. It was his wish that FBV take his pups, whom he adopted from us, when he passed. We did without any hesitation and therefore, brought into our care immediately his beloved Poly and Pi.

Poly (brindle pied) came into rescue healthy at 8 years of age and 24 lbs. Unfortunately, Pi (cream) was not looking as healthy as he was 12+ years old and showing the signs of age. He had cataracts and a life-long struggle with regurgitation and needed smaller, more frequent meals. He also was emaciated (and was continuing to lose weight) and found to have pneumonia, anemia, dehydration and other medical issues. He had been to the vet numerous times in the short time with our rescue and was worsening. The vets felt his quality of life was poor and recommended euthanasia. We made the difficult decision to let this sweet boy cross over the Rainbow Bridge to be with his dad who we know was there with opening arms just waiting for Pi to join him.

Despite Pi’s health issues, he was the sweetest boy. He was good with bathing and grooming, rode well in the car, loved sitting on the couch with Poly and his humans, and was a champ at the vet. He also was a registered therapy dog that children read to at the library. He was an amazing boy who will be greatly missed.

Please when thinking about your future and the future care of your pups, consider who you will leave in charge of your pups and their care. Make sure to have a will stating this and ensure they are left with the funds needed to provide for them. It is so very important.

RIP Will and Pi. You will be greatly missed.

Georgette Memorial

We received some sad news from Georgette’s forever family. They sadly had to let her cross over the Rainbow Bridge. Here are some words that her mama wanted to share about her:

“Eight years ago, we were fortunate to be able to adopt Georgette through FBV. It is an understatement to say that she was a wonderful addition to our family. She was a funny, quirky, sassy, loving little dog and we spoiled her rotten. She loved to eat, go for walks, snuggle, and play and she kept us laughing with her attitude and “Frenchie behaviors”. She loved attention from everyone, especially kids. I type this through tears because we made the heartbreaking decision to put her down due to the ravages of a brain tumor. We will never forget our Georgie and we will always be grateful to FBV for bringing us together. She was the best girl.”

Run free sweet girl. You were obviously so very special and loved.

Sophie Memorial

We have some very sad news….

Sophie has crossed the rainbow bridge.

Sophie was an adorable 6-year-old smiley gal who was surrendered to FBV due to IVDD. She had surgery but remained with impaired mobility and incontinence. She adored her people and LOVED sitting in her person’s lap and chilling with her humans on the couch. She was the ultimate snuggle buddy. She also loved chewing on toys/bones (especially Benebones).

Her foster mother had noticed a change in Sophie one day. She was eating but seemed quieter. She brought her to the vet and chest X-rays were taken. It showed an immense amount of fluid in her chest cavity. Sophie had shown no signs but had a mass that had grown in her chest and ruptured.

Devastatingly, there was nothing that could have been done to fix this for Sophie. The decision was made to let her cross the bridge to free her from any pain. Her foster mother fed her some chocolate and cheese whiz and was there with her, loving her, to the very end.

Sophie was in our care for some time. With that, she received so much love and support from all of our Villagers. Whenever there was an ask for help with her care, our community of supporters came through for her.

Thank you to everyone that loved Sophie. Thank you to her foster family for showing her how loved she was all the way to the Rainbow Bridge.

RIP Ivan

We have some very sad news to share. Ivan’s heart stopped while under anesthesia for a dental and ear packing, and he unfortunately passed away.

We hadn’t chosen a dental lightly especially at his age, but a dental had been recommended for him 2 years ago per past vet records and he had to have over 80% of his teeth removed or there would eventually be other serious health complications for him. We had chosen to remove the rotten teeth, at the recommendation of the vet, to give him a better quality of life.

Even with all of Ivan’s ailments, he was a happy old man who was enjoying his new life at his foster home. He ate up all the attention and enjoyed the company of his foster family and their pack.

His last days were happy. He got to visit a dog park, ate scrambled eggs for breakfast, ate all his new favorite treats, went on walks around the neighborhood and received nightly snuggles on the couch with his foster dad. He was very much loved.

Our hearts are extremely heavy. We appreciate the amazing love and life that his foster family had shown him, and we greatly appreciate all that they did for him all the way until the end when his foster mom drove to the vet’s office to hold him one last time.

Rest in love Ivan.

Please give a warm welcome to Ivan! He is a handsome 12-year-old gentleman who was surrendered by his owner when they no longer had the time to provide the care he needed. He is currently hanging his hat in Texas with a wonderful foster family until he has improved medically.

Ivan came to FBV stinky, shaky, and with overgrown toenails (sadly some toenails were grown into his paw pads). He also came with numerous sores/scabs all over his body – from head to tail and especially in his face folds. Both his eyes have cataracts that hinder his vision, and his hearing seems to be impaired as well.

He has been to the vet and was found to have bacterial and yeast infections in his ears. He also has a bacterial skin infection. He has been prescribed medications for the infections so hopefully these will clear up in no time at all. His shaking, per the vet, is neurological. The vet also found that 80% of his teeth need to be pulled so a dental will be in his future.

Because of Ivan’s skin issues, he has required more frequent baths but no worries…he enjoys them! He is just as sweet as pie and truly loves everyone and everything including his foster fur brothers. He also really loves naps and baby carrots. He is a guy’s dog – obsessed with his foster dad following him everywhere he goes.

RIP Miss Piggy

Last week we asked the Village for help with Ms. Piggy’s medical bills. You rallied and helped support her, Kermit, and Demi.

We wish we had better news.

Sadly, we had to make the decision that we needed to help Ms. Piggy cross the rainbow bridge. We sought out the advice of specialists. We discovered that she had minimal quality of life and surgery to fix her health issues would have been invasive and incredibly painful.

Her front leg needed to be amputated and both back legs had grade 4 luxating patellas. Her femurs were bowed out. To fix these issues we would have had to cut her femurs and shave down the bones. It would have required months of painful recovery with a very low success rate.

This also doesn’t even touch her suspected spinal issues. She couldn’t walk and just laid in one spot. She stopped eating and was excessively panting.

It's just incredibly sad what this dog went through. We decided to make the humane choice and let her cross the rainbow bridge. She was surrounded in love. Her foster mother held her and loved her until the very end.

Thank you for all of your support. Thank you to her foster home for showing her kindness, compassion, and love. Sometimes, that’s all we can do.

Miss Piggy was dumped at the door of a veterinary specialty practice that FBV works with often and respects immensely. A vet tech found her on the way into work after Piggy had been left in a crate overnight in the parking lot. She was not microchipped and found to be in rough shape. The practice asked if FBV would take her in, help provide her with the rest of the care she needed and find her a forever home.

Piggy has significant mobility issues. She has unresolvable mobility issues in a rear limb as well as a front limb. Her front limb is in such bad shape that we are thinking amputation may be her best bet for a better quality of life. However, we are going to have her evaluated by specialists to help us determine the best course of action for her mobility. For now, her foster mom helps her get around in a stroller. She also has a double ear infection and cherry eye and will need dental scaling for her teeth.

Miss Piggy is a sweetie and is being showered with love and affection in her foster home. Her foster mom has also finally found Miss Piggy’s favorite bone…elk antlers!

Tater Tot Memorial

We received this beautiful memorial for Tater Tot from his forever mom:

"Hello!
I wanted to share Tater Tot’s story and let everyone at French Bulldog Village know how much this organization has meant to me. I adopted Tater Tot (formerly known as Whisper) in 2009. He was a breeder surrender who was born deaf. On a stormy winter night in NYC, I picked him up from the airport and met, what I can only describe, as a judgy old man trapped in a 9-week-old puppy’s body. His dogwalker even referred to him as “El Viejo” which means old man in Spanish. Because he was deaf, he always stared you right in the eyes, and you could see the wheels turning in his head. To most he was a weird curmudgeon, who wanted what he wanted when he wanted it. Didn’t love other dogs (dogs were beneath him!), didn’t like cats, but did like to be praised and got very angry when not admired. Very few people got him, but if you were one of the lucky ones who did get him, you had an unbreakable special relationship. In his eleven years on this Earth he saw me through a divorce, another bad break up, three states, five zip codes, and three jobs working in health care (during Covid no less.) He was my ride or die! I lost him three months ago to an insulinoma, but he went peacefully swaying in a hammock. Tater Tot was the glue that kept me together, and there will never be another judgy stubborn crabby old man Frenchie who can take his place. Sorry if this is long winded, but I wanted to let you all know how special this dog was to me. I can’t thank you enough for everything you do and hope to be of service in the future. I had eleven great years with a deaf stubborn Frenchie and once my current puppies are older, would like to explore fostering deaf French bulldogs. I’ll leave you with a few photos of Tater Tot, giving the side eye, and being his true self.

Tater Tot sounds like he was one special guy. We are so very sorry to hear of his passing. He obviously was very loved and spoiled. RIP Tater Tot....one day you will see your mom again.

RIP Conrad

In July 2020, French Bulldog Village took in an exceptional pup when he was only 2 days old. We named him Conrad. Conrad’s breeder immediately realized that he was going to be a special case and did the right thing by calling us to surrender him. Conrad was surrendered to us because he had anal astresia. Anal atresia is a congenital abnormality in which there is no opening at the end of the digestive tract, where the anus normally is. It is part of a wider spectrum of abnormalities involving the anus and last part of the bowel, the rectum. Conrad was rushed to the hospital as soon as he came into our care.

After showing some promise, Conrad began experiencing complications. Conrad began defecating from other orifices. After a contrast study, it was discovered that he also had a severe pelvic urethral fistula. These are the only issues we could see in the contrast study, but there very well could have been more unseen issues. His doctors concluded that even if we attempted surgery, he would not survive. He also would require numerous follow up surgeries. He would have been fecal and urine incontinent and prone to infections and sepsis. We felt that the kindest thing to do was to let Conrad be at peace. We wish we could have done more, but his quality of life was in question. We didn't want him to suffer.

RIP sweet Conrad. You were loved by so many in your short life and although you are gone, you will never be forgotten.

Memorial for Sponge

Alum (2012/2013) Sponge sadly passed away last month. This lovely memorial was written by a member of her forever family —

“It is with an enormously heavy heart that I am writing this, and as much disbelief as I am still in, Sponge--- my Little Woo, Grandma Woofle, Tiny Dancer, Little Leading Lady, My Wee Lamb, My Angel Pants--- has unfortunately crossed the rainbow bridge.

Sponge was a feisty 14 years old and she put up one hell of a fight to the end. I found Sponge from French Bulldog Village in 2014. She was rescued with about 11 other Frenchies. We knew she was perfect for us and that we could spoil her rotten the way she deserved to be spoiled. We drove numerous states away to get this special little lady because she was perfect for us, and we were perfect for her. I don’t remember much from the journey back home after we got her, but I remember she was my girl and I was hers, and I didn’t want her to leave my arms. (We also learned right away that her favorite road snacks were chicken tenders and plain hamburgers, no bun).

About 4 years ago, she had gotten cancer on the top of her head. She had surgery and the vet said that if she made it without getting cancer immediately again, to count every day as a blessing. Every extra day was a gift with her. We got an extra 4 years with this little stinky nugget of sunshine and it was the best 4 extra years that I’ll cherish forever. Sponge loved to sleep in bed with me (and take up half of my king bed), and she would snuggle under the covers because she never wanted to be cold. She would wake up in the morning with the biggest smile, and so happy to be awake and to be greeted and to greet me and mom. She would let you know when she wanted something or when she was displeased. She was the best little old lady I have ever met, and she taught me so much.

People always say losing a pet sucks, but man. This really friggin sucks. This still seems pretty surreal and I really don’t like it. I love you, my little Angel Pants Woo. Thank you for everything and thank you for keeping Memere company.”

RIP sweet Sponge! You are gone but obviously will never be forgotten. It is very apparent how much your family loves you and we can see why. You sound like you were one special gal.
