Meet Hippo — the tiny, cat‑like Frenchie with the soul of a polite old lady, the voice of a gargling gremlin, and the heart of a quiet, gentle companion who just wants a soft bed, a calm home, and a life lived firmly at ground level.
At 7.5 years old and a dainty 16.6 pounds, Hippo is the definition of low‑maintenance charm. She was lovingly surrendered when her previous family no longer had the time she deserved, and she has settled into foster life with the grace of someone who has always believed she was royalty. (And honestly… she kind of is.)
Her Personality:
Hippo is sweet, polite, and wonderfully independent. She greets you with happy wiggles and soft eyes, but she’s not the type to fling herself into your lap or demand cuddles. She prefers to be near you, not on you — a quiet presence padding around the house like a tiny, snorting shadow.
She’s gentle with kids, lived beautifully with a toddler in her previous home, and doesn’t jump. Her version of “greeting you” is placing her front paws on the bed or couch and looking up like, “Hello, I have arrived.”
She’s also a follower — especially of other Frenchies — and will happily trail behind the pack like the world’s cutest caboose.
Her Dog Social Skills:
Hippo lives with multiple dogs of all sizes, including two friendly Dobermans she enjoys following around like their pocket‑sized intern. She plays with dogs her size and coexists peacefully with bigger ones.
But… she was used to being the queen bee, so if another dog steals her toy or tries to share her food, she’ll let out a frustrated bark that says, “Excuse me, that was MINE.” It’s all noise, no malice — just a diva moment.
She’s not cuddly with other dogs, but she enjoys their company and likes having a buddy around.
Eating Habits (aka: Her Culinary Journey)
Hippo is a picky eater who was previously fed people food, so she’s learning that dog food is, in fact, edible. She’s transitioning from free‑feeding to scheduled meals and doing well — but she prefers to eat in her own space. If another dog approaches her bowl, she’ll guard it, but when fed separately, she’s perfect.
Sometimes she needs a little hand‑feeding encouragement, which she accepts with the dignity of a queen accepting grapes.
Grooming & Care
Baths? Fine. Nail trims and face folds? She tolerates them with the dramatic sigh of someone enduring a great injustice. (An extra set of hands helps.)
Her previous ear infection has resolved, and she is currently healthy. However, she came into rescue with a head tilt (definite cause unknown but possibly from a previous middle ear infection) and has a history of urinary infections. She has a tucked vulva and will require her lady parts to be wiped daily.
Car Rides
Hippo in your arms: panicked panting; Hippo in a crate: “Ah yes, this is acceptable.” She travels beautifully when crated.
Home Life
Hippo is house trained, uses a doggie door, and learned the household routine quickly. She sleeps behind a baby gate or in her crate with the door open — she actually puts herself to bed. If she needs to go out overnight, she’ll wake you with her signature alien gargle that sounds suspiciously like she’s yelling “Arby’s.”
She’s quiet, non‑destructive, and content to snooze on soft beds. Truly, she’s like living with a cat… a cat who snorts and occasionally shouts in gargle.
Her One Big Quirk
Hippo is a calm, polite lady — until you bring out the hose, mop, or vacuum. Then she transforms into a tiny, furious gremlin who MUST defend the household from these evil, noisy monsters. It’s her one dramatic flaw, and honestly, it’s kind of hilarious.
Exercise & Energy
She’s low‑energy, enjoys short strolls, and gets hot easily. A fenced yard is needed, but she doesn’t do much outside besides potty and sniff the air like a tiny philosopher.
Ideal Home
Hippo would thrive in a quiet home with:
- A friendly dog her size
- Humans who appreciate an independent companion
- No expectation of couch cuddles or bed snuggles
- A fenced yard
- A calm lifestyle
- People who find her quirks endearing, not inconvenient
She doesn’t need constant attention, doesn’t need long walks, doesn’t need to be on furniture, and doesn’t need someone home all day. She’s easy, sweet, funny, and wonderfully self‑contained.
The Heart of Hippo
Hippo is the kind of dog who makes you smile simply by existing. She’s tiny, adorable, polite, and full of personality — a little old soul who wants to live her life peacefully, with soft beds, gentle routines, and a family who loves her exactly as she is.
If you’re looking for a quiet, quirky, low‑maintenance companion who will make you laugh with her gargle‑talk and her dramatic hatred of vacuums… Hippo might just be your girl.
