Ember in New Jersey- ADOPTED!
Ember is 3 years old and ready to find her FUREVER!! She arrived to FBV needing urgent coloplexy surgery for a rectal prolapse, her second such incident. Ember immediately underwent the coloplexy surgery and was spayed. Her recovery, however, was complicated by bloody diarrhea and straining.
Initial treatments for Giardia, food trials, and multiple rounds of antibiotics didn't resolve her symptoms, leading to a referral to an internal medicine specialist. There, Ember received a crucial ultrasound and a colonoscopy with biopsies, which led to a diagnosis of E. coli associated granulomatous colitis. This is a rare type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that attacks the large intestine or colon.
The good news is that with the right treatment, dogs diagnosed with this condition can have a favorable outcome. We are thrilled to announce that Ember has responded wonderfully to her treatment and is now considered CURED! While Ember is cured from E. coli associated granulomatous colitis, her new family will need to monitor for any potential symptoms of a relapse.
Ember's only current health concern is environmental allergies. Thankfully, this condition is very well-managed and maintained with a consistent routine of baths and Apoquel. Her new family will need to continue this regimen to keep her comfortable and itch-free.
Ember has also been doing exceptionally well on her current diet of Hill's GI Biome prescription kibble. Likely once she's settled into her forever home, she should be able to successfully transition to a quality non-prescription diet. Her new family will have the flexibility to choose a great food that works for her. When it comes to hydration, Ember is a fan of the finer things in life! While she will drink from a regular dish, she prefers drinking from a fountain water dish.
Ember is a very affectionate and loving dog. She interacts very well with dogs of all sizes, both male and female. What's even better is that Ember absolutely loves snuggling and playing with her foster siblings. She also has a good temperament around food and other animals. She has been fed separately to ensure she gets her specific prescription diet. However, she doesn't display any resource guarding and happily enjoys treats in a group setting.
Ember thrives on canine companionship, so a household with at least one other dog would be ideal, especially if they match her moderate energy level. A doggie sibling who is happy to share their bed and toys with her would be a dream come true, truly welcoming her into the family and helping teach her the ropes. Her joy is palpable and she truly lights up when she sees other dogs, eager to engage in play or companionship.
When it comes to cats, Ember's initial enthusiasm wasn't exactly a hit. She got overly excited and playfully pounced, which understandably wasn't well-received by the foster's resident feline. While Ember has learned to show some respect, she still struggles with their boundaries and occasionally gives chase. For this reason, it's recommended that Ember not be placed in a home with cats to ensure a harmonious environment for everyone.
Small critters are a big “no” as she has demonstrated prey drive and has even caught baby birds while outside in the fenced yard. However, this is easily managed on walks; she's easily redirected when on a leash, which means her outdoor adventures can be fun and controlled.
Ember is a remarkably tolerant pup when it comes to grooming! She handles face fold cleanings, baths, and nail trims with ease. This makes keeping her healthy and tidy a much simpler task. The only area where she shows a bit of sensitivity is with ear cleanings but with a gentle approach and positive reinforcement, her new family can help her become more comfortable with this important part of her routine.
Ember truly is a social butterfly, making new friends wherever she goes. She always greets new people with an eager and friendly disposition, both inside and outside the home. She is truly a joy to introduce to others. However, she has a tendency to jump up on people, especially when excited, sometimes even aiming for faces to give kisses. While she's greatly improved in this area, it's something her new family will need to continue working on with consistent training. Also, while she has been around young children and acted appropriately, caution with very young children should be taken to ensure everyone's comfort and safety.
Don't let Ember's innocent looks fool you—she's incredibly smart, perhaps even smarter than the average human! This clever girl has a mischievous side and will absolutely orchestrate plans to sneak treats or steal items of interest within her reach. She's even known to climb on chairs or other objects to achieve her goals. However, she's also quite discerning; she only engages in these antics when no one is looking, proving she knows her manners! Because of her impressive intellect and sneaky tendencies, Ember cannot be trusted unsupervised. For her safety and the protection of your belongings (especially items on countertops and tables), it's best to confine her to a crate or an "Ember-proofed" room when you can't keep an eye on her.
Ember is crate trained. She knows her crate as her special place for bedtime and will walk right in if you tell her to "go to bed." This is especially true when she's tired after a full day of fun and exploration. Her willingness to enter her crate makes nighttime routine and safe confinement when needed, a breeze for her future family. Of course, she would also be happy to sleep in bed with her human, so she would be just happy with learning the crate is a place to "take a nap!”
When it comes to confinement, Ember has some specific preferences. If she's confined to a separate room and hears people, she will whine and cry. However, she's much more settled if she's confined and people leave the house. This suggests mild separation anxiety when she knows people are home but can't be with them. Her new family will need to be mindful of this and potentially work on making her confinement a positive experience, perhaps with engaging toys or puzzle feeders, when they are present, but she needs to be secured.
Ember has made great strides with her house training and does very well, but she does need frequent outdoor access if she's not confined. Thankfully, she provides easy-to-read cues when she needs to go potty. Ember isn't a huge fan of rain. She'll sometimes act as though she's "melting" if asked to go outside in the wet weather, but with a little encouragement, she'll cooperate. A patient owner will help her through those rainy-day potty breaks!
Ember is also the perfect loyal companion! She has a heartwarming tendency to be a "Velcro dog," meaning she loves to accompany her humans throughout the house. For anyone working from home, she'd be an ideal co-worker, happily laying at their feet while they're on the job. Ember loves having people around. She would absolutely adore being in a home where people are present a lot throughout the day. This constant human interaction will not only fulfill her need for closeness but also greatly benefit her house-training.
If she's placed in a home where someone works outside the home, Ember would do best with continued frequent potty breaks. Ideally, someone could come home at lunch or arrange for a dog walker or pet sitter to let her outside for a midday potty break. This consistency will help reinforce her excellent house-training habits and ensure she remains comfortable and happy throughout the day.
More than just a shadow, Ember is an incredibly affectionate companion, overflowing with warmth and love towards both dogs and people. This makes her an amazing cuddle bug, always ready to snuggle up and share her boundless affection. If you're looking for a devoted friend who will always be by your side and fill your home with love, Ember is undoubtedly the dog for you!
Ember is a dog who knows how to enjoy life! She loves to run outside, play with her toys, chew on Benebones, play fetch and get the zoomies around the house, often leaping on and off couches. But it's not all high-energy antics; Ember also knows when to take it down a notch. She's perfectly content to lay quietly on her bed, snuggle up with her fur-siblings, and absolutely loves to cuddle up on the couch with her humans.
Ember truly thrives when she has room to roam! She loves to run and play and would absolutely prefer a fenced yard where she can safely indulge her passion for sniffing and exploring as well as to provide her with easy and frequent access for potty breaks.
Ember is generally well-mannered on a leash, which is great for walks and outings! Like many enthusiastic dogs, she sometimes needs reminders not to pull, but she's responsive to cues. The sight of her harness and leash sparks immense joy in Ember because she's made the connection that it means either a walk or a car ride! Ember truly shines as a travel enthusiast! She's always happy to hop in the car for a ride, making her an ideal companion for outings. Imagine taking her along for trips to Home Depot, a leisurely walk in the park, or even exploring wineries! She's ready to be your co-pilot for all of life's adventures, big and small.
When it's time to wind down, Ember is all about comfort and closeness. She loves sleeping in the bed with her humans or simply napping on the couch while watching TV. She's the perfect snuggle buddy, ready to share her warmth and affection with her forever family.
Ember has a truly hilarious passion: water play! She goes absolutely wild for water shooting out of a garden hose, so much so that her foster mom has to keep her inside when watering the garden. While usually a quiet dog, Ember truly "finds her voice" during these water antics, barking and biting at the stream like a "complete lunatic!”
One of her absolute favorite activities is playing in a splash pool. However, her enthusiasm needs a watchful eye; she will try to grab the hose where it connects to the splash pool (RIP to the last splash pad!), meaning she must have someone watching her every second during water play. For a family who enjoys supervised water fun, Ember will bring endless entertainment and joy!
Ember is truly "on fire" – not just with her vibrant personality, but with the incredible spirit that has brought her back from a dreary past to a life full of glow! This resilient girl has fought for her life and blossomed into a loving, playful, and incredibly smart companion. She deserves a family who will cherish her as a forever member, appreciating her charming quirks and rewarding her with all the love she's waited for. Ember has the best grin and the silliest expressions, especially with her adorable habit of sticking out her tongue that is sure to bring endless smiles to whoever is lucky enough to welcome this charismatic girl into their heart and home!
If you feel Ember could be your next best friend and you have the time and attention (as well as treats of course) to shower on her, then get to applying! This gal is for you!
