Get excited everyone because Portia is ready to find her forever home! She is 8 years old and weighs 22lbs. She came to FBV when her owner could no longer provide the care she needed.
Portia gets along with kids of every age and all dogs. She doesn't play with other dogs but enjoys being in their company. We are not sure how she would do with cats. However, no small pets, such as lizards, rabbits, frogs, and birds, as she has shown some prey drive to these animals.
She is a calm gal, only wanting pets and lovin’. Feeding time is really the only time she gets excited and bounces around. She has shown no resource guarding with other animals or people.
Portia is great in the car and will lay right down when you get moving. She loves bones and flavored chews as well as small, stuffed toys and small balls. She loves to play fetch, and it is funny to watch her run in slow motion. She brings the ball right back to you so you can throw it again. She then starts to take off in the direction she thinks you are going to throw it in. She also really enjoys cuddling. If you lie down on the couch, she will come up and lay right in your arms.
Portia is not destructive so can be left out and about when her humans aren’t home which is good because she isn’t the fondest of crates. She would be fine in a condo or apartment but will need to go outside to potty; she is not at all pee pad trained. Take her outside, tell her to go “pee pee,” and she goes. She is housetrained and can go all night without needing to go potty but does need potty breaks during the day (first thing in the am and right before bed, within 15 minutes of eating, and periodic other potty breaks throughout the day).
Portia is an absolute love bug. You will be her everything and all she will want is to be around you. You will need to be careful if you are not so steady on your feet as she is often underfoot. While she is clingy, she has not shown separation anxiety when foster mom leaves the house.
She snores but it isn't overly loud. She makes snorting sounds when showing affection that kind of sound like she is purring which is super sweet and calming. Portia eats a fish-based diet (changed from a chicken-based diet) and is now having more formed stools. She also is on a pre & probiotic.
Portia suffers from skin allergies, skin yeast or fungus, and stenotic ears (her ears canals are very narrow). She was treated for a bacterial skin infection and ear infection while in rescue with antibiotics, Cytopoint injections, and a medicated ear flush prescribed by the vet. She will continue to need: Cytopoint injections at least every 6 weeks for now, topical medicated shampoo and ear cleaner used 1- 2 times/week, and her paws wiped with medicated wipes daily. Her face folds will need to be wiped every morning as well. Thank goodness Portia is very tolerant and cooperative with grooming!
She is great on a leash! She will walk right next to you, no pulling or dragging you along. She enjoys short walks especially if there are people and dogs outside to meet. The more attention there is the better for Portia. However, she doesn’t require a lot of exercise. Most times, she goes outside, does her business immediately, and if nothing is going on, will want to go right back inside.
She would love for someone to be home with her more often than not or someone who can take her along to work, because she loves people and attention. However, she would be okay with a midday potty break if you work outside the home.
Portia is absolutely the sweetest, most chill and loving dog! She is not high energy so if you are looking for a couch potato, she’s a perfect match. She also is very well-behaved and an amazing companion. You can’t help but fall immediately in love with her!
