Tiago — A Big‑Hearted Boy Ready for His New Beginning

Tiago is a three‑year‑old, 36‑pound Frenchie with a huge head, a huge heart, and a story that has shaped him into the affectionate, resilient dog he is today. He came into rescue as an owner surrender when his family welcomed a newborn and could no longer manage his medical needs. He arrived with significant eye issues and allergies, but even in those early days, he showed the gentle, tolerant nature that has made everyone who meets him fall in love.

His medical journey has been remarkable. Tiago underwent surgery with an ophthalmologist to remove a large dermoid from his right eye and repair cherry eye in his left. The transformation has been incredible — his eyes look wonderful now, his tear production is excellent, and he won’t require any ongoing eye medications. Through countless vet visits, poking, prodding, needles, and even eye procedures, Tiago remained patient and sweet. One vet tech spent nearly an entire day holding him in her lap as he recovered from surgery because he was such a calm, trusting boy. He also has suspected food and seasonal allergies and receives Cytopoint injections as needed. He eats Royal Canin HP prescription food, which may be a long‑term part of his care, but otherwise he seems healthy and comfortable.

Life in foster care has revealed Tiago’s two distinct personalities — “Indoor Tiago” and “Outdoor Tiago.” Indoors, he is a big, soft lug who wants nothing more than to curl up on the couch or bed with his people. He melts into you like a 36‑pound weighted blanket, sighing deeply as he drifts off to sleep. He is quiet, affectionate, and happiest when he can rest his enormous head on someone he loves. Outdoors, though, Tiago becomes alert and curious, taking in a world that still feels new to him. We suspect he previously lived mostly inside or in a small yard, so neighborhood walks are full of discoveries. Since being neutered and settling into routine, he has calmed significantly, though he still has some prey drive for squirrels and rabbits. Even that has softened over time as he becomes more familiar with his surroundings.

Tiago has a moderate to high energy level outside and enjoys two to three miles of walking each day, usually broken into shorter sessions. Indoors, he is calm and laid‑back. He loves walks, loves his Benebones (he’s an enthusiastic chewer, so no plush toys or antlers), and loves sleeping on the couch or bed with his people. He does not need someone home all day, but he does need someone committed to giving him daily exercise and continuing the training he’s been working so hard on.

He has been a wonderful houseguest. Tiago is fully house trained and has gone up to seven hours in his crate without issue. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night, though he’s also had a few nights on the bed where he barely moved until sunrise. He rides beautifully in the car, always crated for safety, and while he may whine briefly when his people leave, he settles quickly. He is leash trained and improving every day, especially with a front‑clasp harness that has made loose‑leash walking much easier. He knows sit, stay, down, and come. His foster home has a fenced yard, but he has been almost exclusively leash‑walked, so a yard is not required.

Tiago has also shown that he can live peacefully with another dog. He was slowly introduced to a small female Frenchie in his foster home, and the two are now good pals who enjoy walks and couch time together. He shows interest in other dogs on walks but hasn’t had many close interactions beyond his foster sister. He has been fed separately from her to prevent any issues, and he does not resource guard with people. He is extremely affectionate with humans and seems to prefer people for close snuggles. He likely would not welcome a cat, though with a slow introduction he might acclimate.

Tiago does need a home without children. He had one nip incident with a neighbor some time ago, and while it was minor and has never happened before or since, his foster family took it seriously. A trainer evaluated the situation and believes Tiago thought the neighbor was offering a treat — he jumped up toward the hand and accidentally caught it. Since then, Tiago has completed multiple private training sessions and practices daily. He has made wonderful progress with his manners, especially with sitting politely instead of jumping up for affection. Given his size, strength, and enthusiasm, he will do best with adults who can continue guiding him.

Apartment living is an unknown for him. He handled both stairs and the elevator at the vet with no problem when it was just him and his person, but riding in a small elevator with another dog might be overstimulating at first. He is not a barker — the only time his foster family has heard him bark is in his sleep — so noise isn’t likely to be an issue.

Tiago’s foster family says their favorite thing he does is crawl onto his human on the couch, settle his huge head on their chest, and fall asleep within minutes. After everything he has been through, watching him relax so completely is incredibly moving. He is a loving, quiet, deeply affectionate dog who has healed from his medical challenges and is ready for a home where he can continue to grow, learn, and be cherished.

He would thrive with active adopters who can give him daily exercise, continue his training, and appreciate both his strength and his sweetness. He has done wonderfully with the resident Frenchie after a slow introduction, but he would also be perfectly content as an only dog if he gets plenty of affection and interaction with his people. A fenced yard is a bonus but not necessary.
