Twix arrived in rescue with more history behind her than anyone could fully know. At 6–7 years old and just 14 pounds, she had already lived the hard life of a breeder dog, having a couple of litters before being surrendered to a local rescue and eventually making her way to FBV. She came in needing emergency surgery for pyometra, but in true Twix fashion, she recovered beautifully — tiny, tough, and determined to keep going.
Because her early life is a mystery, some of her behaviors were shaped by fear and uncertainty. In her first foster home, that fear led to a bite incident, and she showed unpredictable, fear‑based aggression around new people, new environments, and high‑value items. But Twix is not a dog who stays stuck in her past. With the help of a dedicated trainer and patient fosters, she began to learn that the world could be safe. She has spent significant time working with the trainer, building confidence, learning structure, and discovering that she doesn’t have to protect herself so fiercely. She has made tremendous progress — enough that she now meets new people with curiosity and joy — but it’s important to understand that in a brand‑new home, she may regress at first. She will always need a confident, consistent leader who can guide her with calm structure.
Her trainer believes in her so deeply that she has offered to continue supporting her adopters after adoption — whether they live nearby or across the country. That ongoing guidance will be an invaluable resource as Twix transitions into her forever home.
Today, Twix lives with dogs and cats and coexists well with them as long as they respect her boundaries. She doesn’t seek affection from other animals and doesn’t want to share her toys or food, but she’s content to simply live alongside them. She cannot live with small animals like birds or gerbils, and she will not be placed in a home with children. With humans, though, she can be wonderfully affectionate — on her terms. When she’s ready, she loves snuggling, training for treats, and curling up in her crate, which is her safe place at home and in the car. She travels in her kennel and will happily snooze her way down the road.
Twix is a medium‑energy girl who enjoys short walks (her low‑rider legs get tired quickly, so bring a stroller for longer outings), playing fetch, and especially anything that works her brain. She loves training sessions, games that make her think, and the thrill of chasing a tennis ball — though toys can sometimes get her overly aroused, which is where her training comes in. She’s clever, mischievous, and adaptable, thriving when she has structure and clear expectations. She knows sit, stay, down, come, fetch (“get it”), place, and works with a marker system. She does well with a confident leader for grooming and handling. When excited or overwhelmed, she can become mouthy — her way of creating space — but with guidance, she has become far more predictable and grounded.
Because she can guard food and toys, Twix must always be fed separately and have toys available only under supervision around other dogs. She eats twice a day and gets rewards throughout the day. She has very minor allergies that can cause irritation or cysts between her toes, so her paws should be checked regularly and kept clean. She also needs to be carried up and down stairs and prevented from jumping on and off furniture to protect her spine and tiny legs.
Twix would do well in an apartment with frequent potty breaks — she’s tiny and has a tiny bladder. She gets structured potty breaks every three hours and has had no accidents when kept on schedule. At night she sometimes resists going out because she’s tired, but she is taken outside until she goes, and she always has access to water in her crate. She loves her crate and has never had accidents when kept on her routine.
She doesn’t bark much, pays little attention to passing dogs, and would enjoy a fenced yard but doesn’t require one. What she does require is someone with a strong background in dog ownership — someone patient, confident, and committed to continuing her training. Ideally, her person will be home at least half the day or able to provide a midday potty break. Twix’s past may have shaped her, but it should not limit her future. With the right leader, she will continue to blossom.
And make no mistake — Twix is a hoot. Her tiny body and big head are a comedy duo all on their own, and she loves trading tennis balls with you just to keep the game interesting. She is quirky, bright, affectionate, and full of personality. She hasn’t had a glorious life, but she deserves one. She deserves a family who will prioritize her safety, her training, and her happiness — plain and simple.
That’s who Twix is searching for. Someone who sees her worth, understands her needs, and is ready to give this pint‑sized gem the magnificent future she’s been waiting for.
